As a social media manager you’ll be responsible for communicating with TLM Media’s customer leads or clients through social media websites. If you love working with social media and are interested in finding new ways to connect with people then this career could offer what you’re looking for.
You’ll be using your great communication skills and creative writing ability to engage with people online and in person. You’ll also be using your good organizational skills and knowledge of social media tools to get your message across.
The new social media manager cans get into this job by demonstrating that they have a good understanding of social media and what makes people join online communities. Work activities
As a social media manager you will promote and manage their online presence through social media websites. During a typical working day you will analyse, review and contribute to activity on websites like:
Facebook and Twitter
YouTube and Flickr
Google+ and Pinterest.
On a day-to-day basis you will typically:
- update social media sites on a regular basis
- write blogs, articles and posts that are relevant and will appeal to social media users
- respond to social media posts and develop discussions
- check the internet and social media sites for company mentions and customer feedback
- search for posts, news and articles that will interest site visitors
- oversee competitions and campaigns that promote your company
- take part in conferences and group chat that is relevant to your industry or company
- educate other staff on the use of social media and promote its use within your company
- develop strategies to increase ‘follows’ or ‘’likes’ on sites like Twitter
- use social media tools like Hootsuite, TweetDeck or Buffer to manage multiple sites.
You will also gather information on numbers of site visitors or how people find your site, using web tracking tools like Google Analytics, Social Report or Bitly.
You’ll use this data to increase visitor numbers and improve the user experience, using techniques like search engine optimisation (SEO). This can involve using key phrases, words and search terms to drive people to your social media sites. You will report your findings back to management and show how your ideas are bringing visitors to your social media sites.
In this job you may also be responsible for writing content for websites and other online specialist industry publications like blogs, ebooks and newsletters.
In this job you can also be known as a social media strategist or specialist, online community manager or a social
media marketing manager.
Internship Entry Requirements
There are several ways you can become a social media manager for TLM Media. We are expecting you to be working towards or have a degree in a relevant subject, for instance:
advertising
media and communications
digital marketing
journalism
public relations
business management.
You can also get into this job without a degree after having gained the skills and experience we are looking for in other areas of work, like marketing, advertising or PR. If you’ve got good project management and communication skills, and a clear understanding of social media, you may be able to start as an assistant manager and work your way up.
If you are new to working with social media you can gain skills and knowledge by studying towards a qualification.
We will be interested in your knowledge and experience of social media. As well as developing an online presence through websites and blogs, you could gain experience in other ways. You can try these ideas to get you started:
successfully manage your own social media profiles
volunteer to manage social media for a charitable organisation
ask to get involved in social media sites of the company you already work for.
You’ll be expected to have a good level of IT knowledge. You will be using social media software and tools to connect with social media users and track the impact of your posts and campaigns. Knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) methods, the use of ‘key’ or searched for words to drive more users to your social media site, may also improve your career prospects.
Experience of graphic design and digital editing software may also improve your chances of finding work. You’ll be able to use these skills to make your posts to social media more visually appealing by adding videos, photos and infographics.
Training and development
Once you are working as a social media manager you’ll be expected to keep your knowledge and understanding of social media websites and tools current.
TLM Media will provide and arranged for Online Training and Certifications in Social Media Management.
If you have a degree already, you can also work towards postgraduate qualifications, such as Masters that is relevant to working in social media. Course titles vary and cover subjects, such as:
